A nursing degree, but no license: Hundreds await ruling in California court battle

Hundreds of graduates who attended an online nursing college will have to continue to wait to find out if they’ll be able to work in California and may need to repeat semesters of school. Hundreds of graduates from Nightingale College, an online nursing college in California, are awaiting a court ruling regarding their ability to work in California and may need to repeat semesters of school. The California Board of Registered Nursing has stated that its requirement for 500 hours of direct patient care training does not apply to the school. However, the board disagrees and believes state law requires all nursing graduates to complete the minimum training before they can apply for California licenses. Nightingales College, which is registered in Utah, argues that there is no evidence that a graduate from the school has provided the "highest quality of medical care." The school is suing the board and seeking a preliminary injunction from a Sacramento Superior Court judge.
