BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Working as a DJ in Tehachapi, Roy Kirk ingratiated himself with parents.

Then he molested their children.

Kirk, 62, was sentenced Monday to 100 years to life in prison after being found guilty of molesting four children.

One of the victims spoke before sentencing. She said she first looked upon Kirk as one of the family — then he started touching her.

“I hated myself for so long and blamed myself,” she said. “I told myself I deserved it.”

Now, with Kirk facing life behind bars, she said she can finally move on with her life.

Kirk showed no remorse. Before sentencing, he blamed his conviction on ineffective counsel.

“I’m an innocent man and I deserved a fair trial, which I did not get because of the improprieties of my five attorneys,” he said. Charged in 2017, Kirk’s case passed to multiple lawyers over the years.

Judge John W. Lua told Kirk that, having presided over his trial, he found he was represented effectively and as required by law. He then sentenced him.

The abuse occurred from 2004 to 2012, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

The first allegation against Kirk, made to Tehachapi police in 2009, went uninvestigated, prosecutors said.

A second victim reported abuse to a school aide in 2016. Kirk was arrested and has remained in custody since June 2017, after which a third and fourth victim were found, prosecutors said.

A victim advocate with the prosecutor’s office read statements from two of the victims. After her encounters with Kirk, one wrote, she experienced panic attacks around men, even her own father.

Drinking, drugs and risky behavior followed, she wrote. She got through those dark times, and is now a mother who has a strong relationship with her family and is studying to be a nurse.

Still, what Kirk did will never leave her, she wrote.

“I may be healing,” she wrote, “but the wounds will always be there.”
