A man was convicted on Monday for a high-speed DUI-related crash from last April that led to a motorcyclist's amputation of his leg and the loss of three fingers, said the Kern County District Attorney.
Jacob Bookout was convicted of driving under the influence causing injury, driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08 or above causing injury, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs causing injury, reckless driving causing injury, and resisting or delaying a peace officer. It was also found true that Bookout inflicted great bodily injury.
On April 1, 2023, at around 9:30 p.m., Bookout was driving his Ford F-150 at 101 miles per hour southbound on Panama Lane, approaching the intersection of Ashe Road, said prosecutors. At the same time, the victim was also heading southbound on Panama Lane on a motorcycle and had slowed to stop for the red light at the intersection.
Bookout began changing lanes as he approached the intersection and struck the victim on the motorcycle. He kept driving through the intersection on a red light and drove through into oncoming traffic before crashing into a building and a fire hydrant, said prosecutors.
The victim was ejected from his motorcycle. His left leg above the knee was amputated and he lost three fingers, said the DA's Office.
Bookout had a BAC of 0.122%, as well as THC and hydrocodone in his blood, according to analysis from the Kern Regional Crime Lab.
“We won’t stand for irresponsible actions on our roads. Although this conviction can’t reverse the damages, let this serve as a reminder of the serious consequences when choosing to be an unsafe motorist," stated Kern DA Cynthia Zimmer.
Bookout is set to be sentenced on June 26. He faces up to six years in prison.
