The sport of pickleball has taken off in recent years, and the city of Bakersfield has recognized this trend by opening more than ten new courts for the community to use.
It's a sport similar to Teenis, where people of all ages and backgrounds 'paddle' it out. City officials say that in 2023, more than 1,000 registered participants used Bakersfield's 65 pickleball courts, which include Jastro Park, Beale Park, Campus Park, and Haggin Oaks Park. It does not take into account drop-in community members.
According to a report by the Trust for Public Land, a nonprofit organization devoted to bridging people to the outdoors, Bakersfield ranks #6 in outdoor pickleball courts in public parks nationwide.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Tuesday morning at 9:30 to usher in Jatro Park's newest improvements. These improvements were made possible by an $890,000 grant from the Public Safety and Vital Services Measure and compliance with the stated PSVS Peasure funding priorities.
The ceremony included music and Bakersfield's Recreation and Parks Department's newest outreach unit.
The city hired third-party companies Playcore Wisconsin and Great Western Recreation Incorporated as the designers and Unlimited Engineering Incorporated as the constructors of this project. The project kicked off Monday, January 8, and was completed Friday, May 31, in time for warmer weather.
The City of Bakersfield officials, including its Recreation and Parks Department, ushered in:
• Two newly renovated pickleball courts, one tennis court, and a handball court
• New regulation-played color scheme on all courts
Community members can begin using the new courts as soon as Tuesday without reservation. However, coaching, games, and other commitments may be on a first-come-first-served basis.
Jastro Park is at 2900 Truxtun Avenue in Bakersfield. It is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. For more details, visit its website here.
