BAKERSFIELD, Calif --- (KBAK/FOX58) A proposed ballot measure in California would reclassify misdemeanor offenses as felonies. But a Democrat coalition led by California's Speaker of the House Robert Rivas is introducing a series of bills to defeat the measure.

The series bills seek other means of reducing retail theft such as increasing funding and creating a task force specializing in retail theft. They also may contain a 'poison pill' which means the bills would become defunct if the proposed ballot measure becomes law,

That does not sit well with supporters of the bipartisan Homelessness, Drug Addiction, and Theft Reduction Act. Those include Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig and California Republican National Committeeman Shawn Steel, seen below.

Attorney Adante Pointer sees it differently. Instead of a politicized battle, Pointer suggests Californians look into both the measure and legislation and understand both.

"The voters, and frankly California residents, need to be keeping their eye on the ball as it relates to the resources in our budget and also our society's needs," Pointer said.

Pointer recalling the 2014 initiative to put Proposition 47 into law was focused on reducing the budget and ending the state's efforts in the "War on Drugs".
