The shooting occurred during a prior altercation and resulted in a life-changing injury for both the defendant and the victim. The jury found him guilty of assault with a firearm, battery causing serious bodily injury, and personal use of a firearm causing injury and great bodily injury. Ortiz Ramirez's sentencing is set for July 23, 2024.

A Kern County man faces up to 25 years to life in prison after being found guilty of shooting at a vehicle that left a 17-year-old boy paralyzed in 2021.
The Kern County District Attorney’s Office said on June 10, 2024, a Kern County jury found Ivan Ortiz Ramirez guilty of shooting at a vehicle with people inside, assault with a firearm, and battery causing serious bodily injury.
The jury also found the additional allegations true that Ortiz Ramirez personally used a firearm causing injury and great bodily injury.
The DA’s office said on May 14, 2021, an 18-year-old was driving a vehicle on South Chester Avenue in Bakersfield. The victim, a 17-year-old boy, was the front passenger in the vehicle.
According to the DA’s office, Ortiz Ramirez was parked on the right side of the road and was standing just outside of his front driver’s door. As the victim’s vehicle drove by, Ortiz Ramirez pulled out a gun and fired two rounds into the victim’s vehicle. One of the rounds hit the 17-year-old in the neck.
As a result of the shooting, the 17-year-old is a quadriplegic, according to the DA’s office.
According to the DA’s office, the incident came from a prior altercation.
District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer commented on the conviction, saying, “A terrible decision resulted in a life-changing event for both the defendant and the victim. Using a firearm in pursuit of revenge is never the answer.”
Ortiz Ramirez’s sentencing is set for July 23, 2024, where he faces up to 25 years to life in prison.
