The project included a series of upgrades including an electric HVAC system, water heater, stove and dryer, and solar panels. Project Manager Brianda Castro said the work is designed to reduce the home’s reliance on gas and improve indoor air quality. The cost of making these changes can be a significant barrier for lower-income households, particularly those who may not be able to afford newer appliances or larger home upgrades. The funding also included a workforce development component, where twenty Kern County residents were trained in skills related to home retrofits. Although applications for this round of Kern CASAs funding have closed, Castro continues to connect families with other programs that may help them qualify for similar home improvements.
