Recall Round Two? Governor Newsom could encounter second recall attempt in three years

Anne Hyde Dunsmore, a political strategist and fundraising specialist, is leading the campaign to recall Newsom over his handling of the budget, despite the California Legislative Analyst's Office stating that the state faces a $73 billion deficit. Critics argue that this recall election could add to the deficit and cost the state an expensive process. Former U.S. Senate Candidate Eric Early supports the campaign, stating that over $20 billion has been lost in fighting crime, homelessness and mental health crisis by Newsom. Early also supports the effort, noting that over 1/3 of the 2 million plus signatures obtained in the previous recall were not from Republicans.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --- (KBAK/FOX58) California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) maybe facing a recall election just three years after surviving a previous recall. Eyewitness News spoke with the woman leading the charge, Anne Hyde Dunsmore.

Hyde Dunsmore is an experienced political strategist and fundraising specialist now leading Rescue California. The veteran political maven is attempting to recall the now unpopular governor over his handling of the budget. The California Legislative Analyst's Office, a nonpartisan agency, says the state faces a $73 billion deficit. Newsom has believed the number is closer to $38 billion. Hyde Dunsmore does not buy that Newsom can bring down the deficit.

"[Newsom] is saying 'I know' where $11 to $18 billion of it is going to come from," Hyde Dunsmore said. "Governor, your own budget and not the one you refuse to acknowledge or even comment on, but your own budget shows a $38 billion deficit so you are way off on that. Lets just say he is right, where is the other $20 billion going to come from."

Critics say this recall election has an expensive cost and could add to the deficit. Hyde Dunsmore has an answer for that.

"Take $73 billion, print out all the zeros, underneath it put $200 million which is the expected cost of a special election and start crossing off the zeros," Hyde Dunsmore said. "What you boil down to is would you be willing to spend $2 to save $730?"

Former U.S. Senate Candidate Eric Early was once the lead lawyer for Rebuild California, the group that led the 2021 recall. Early is supportive of this effort too and believes there has been a shift of people that are paying attention to Newsom's handling of the crime, homelessness and mental health crisis that had not done so before.

"This is really a 'We The People' movement," Early said. "It is a movement of the people. And the people have figured it out. People know that our state is in free fall. People know that we have a homelessness epidemic."

Early adds the highly contested Prop 1 push from the Governor may have rubbed some California voters the wrong way.

"People know that over $20 billion has been lost supposedly fighting that epidemic by Newsom," Early said. "Now he is trying and getting a couple more billion that he will end up unfortunately losing in the process."

For those reasons, Early says the effort crosses party lines more than ever before and adds that the last collection of signatures was from a diverse group of individuals as well.

"Over 1/3 of those 2 million plus signatures that were obtained last time were not from Republicans," Early said. "They were from Democrats and Independents. And that is a huge number of signatures. For that number alone, that is over 600,000 signatures on that petition were not Republican."
