Bakersfield businesses resume water use, but some still face oil contamination issues

The Do-Not-Drink & Do-Not-Use advisory was placed on the doors of businesses on Commercial Way, Commerce Drive, Office Park Drive and Truxtun Ave.
The release said oil from a private customer’s property backflowed into the water distribution system on Office Park Drive where several businesses are running.
According to CA Water Services, they improperly connected their equipment to a hose bib on their property which caused the oil to flow through the systems.
Yvonne Kingman with the CA Water Services said the company gave a green light to resume normal water usage on Sunday.
“We had multiple rounds of unit directional flushing to scour the mains,” said Kingman. “The test results confirmed that it was safe to resume normal water use from the water distribution system.”
One business that spoke with Eyewitness News said their water got cleared two days after the lift.
For safety purposes, the owner of Salon Salon the Beauty and Barber shop purchased a rinse kit to wash their clients hair so that they won't have to cancel their appointments.
According to the City of Bakersfield Water System, this contamination advisory has lifted for several of the businesses in Central Bakersfield.
Another business on Office Park Drive said the contamination is something that they’ve been dealing with for over a week.
Elaine Yocum, the owner of Bella Lash Suites said she was working on a client, when all of a sudden she heard a loud thump coming from the bathroom which sounded like an explosion.
“Black oil started coming up through the toilet, I reached down and turned the water off really quick,” said Yocum.
CA Water Services said they were unaware that businesses were still being affected.
"I have the dispensary with the water, so the girls that do have to have water in their room use that, or they bring their own water, but you can only do that for so many clients,” said Yocum. “I’m still really affected by it and trying to get answers.”
According to CA Water Services, The City of Bakersfield is now accepting claims from customers that are still affected.
