Small businesses ready for battle with hot temperatures, inflation

Triple digit temperatures are here but the heat of inflation is already on small businesses, too. The triple digit temperatures and inflation are impacting small businesses in California's Central Valley, with 100 degree weather potentially impacting downtown businesses. However, Dr. Gokce Soydemir at Stanislaus State University, who believes small businesses are resilient despite high interest rates and persistent inflation, has found them to be resilient. One industry unaffected by inflation is thrifting. Michael Osborn, who has been an antiques expert at Mill Creek Antique Mall, believes Bakersfield is the best place in California and the west coast to buy low and sell high. Happy Jacks owner Frances Rosales is known for keeping customers happy and offering affordable meals, despite the triple-digit temperatures and high inflation. An excessive heat warning is ongoing in Bakersfields.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --- (KBAK/FOX58) Triple digit temperatures are here but the heat of inflation is already on small businesses, too.

100 degree weather in the Central Valley can take its toll on downtown businesses. This as recent studies still show inflation as a top challenge but Dr. Gokce Soydemir at Stanislaus State University says our small businesses are up for the challenge.

"Businesses in the valley have been extremely resilient in the backdrop of high interest rates and persistent inflation," Soydemir said. "But inflation is not going as fast as one would like."

One industry not too bothered by inflation or the triple digit temperatures is thrifting. Michael Osborn has been antiquing and thrifting for several years and now has a display at Mill Creek Antique Mall. But Bakersfield's reputation as an antique hub is not all its cut out to be when trying to buy low and sell high.

"It is the best place in California and the west coast to pick. It is the hardest to sell," Osborn said. "There are a lot of people doing this in the area and you know there is so many yard sales and so many different outlets but we have really smart shoppers."

Keeping the good vibes, good food and good temps is Happy Jacks. The eatery's owner, Frances Rosales, is just trying to keep things chill.

"I try to keep it cool because I know it is in the hundreds out there," Rosales said.

Happy Jacks owner Frances Rosales knows how to keep her customers happy. And in this weather that means lots of fans. But one consistent aspect keeping customers coming back is the cost.

"Since before COVID, I think it has been 7 years since we put a price hike," Rosales said. "I want families to be able to afford a meal."

And not just afford a meal but enjoy one, too.

"I want them to be able to bring their children and understand what it is like to eat old-fashioned," Rosales said. "We are a dying breed, we are a mom and pop. And it is a counter and the kids love this."

An excessive heat warning is ongoing in Bakersfield.
