Stay safe

Bakersfield is a relatively safe city, with a homicide rate that has been on the decline since 2005. However, theft of property and drug activity have registered a sharp increase in the city and there are certain parts of the city that are dangerous, even during the day. Dr. Martin Luther King Drive (formerly called Lakeview Ave, and becomes Cottonwood Rd), Union Ave, Bakersfield parts of the East and around Kern County Fairgrounds and South High School are affected by gang violence and can be very dangerous. Bakersfield Oildale neighborhood (which shares its borders with Bakersfield on the Kern River) has a bad reputation for racism and poverty. However, attitudes toward minorities have improved significantly in recent years in Oildale, and the city is relatively safe (though not a tourist attraction).
